The Crate Chair:
A Functional & Conceptual Exploration
The Space Research final project challenged students to explore the concept of a chair through construction, design, and documentation. There were two project paths: one focusing on woodworking and inspired by Joseph Kosuth’s conceptual art, and another using found objects to create multiple experimental chair designs, inspired by Martino Gamper.
Assignment Brief.
The assignment required students to either modify a pre-existing chair design or build a conceptual series of found-object chairs. I opted for the woodworking path, following Rietveld’s DIY Crate Chair plans. My goal was to faithfully recreate the chair while considering its historical context and practical design.
Skills.
This project required a combination of technical and creative skills. I worked on measuring and cutting wood accurately, assembling and securing parts, sanding for a smooth finish, and following detailed construction instructions. Additionally, I developed problem-solving skills to ensure proper alignment and balance while constructing the chair.
Sketching, Building, Refining.
-
Using a tape measure, square tool, and hand saw, I precisely cut the wood to the specified dimensions. For the outside portion, I explored an unconventional gathering space, analyzing how it functioned as a place for education, reflection, or celebration. I represented this analysis through plan and section drawings, selecting a single image that best captured the space’s essence. This exercise challenged me to think beyond traditional architectural structures and consider how non-traditional spaces can foster social interaction.
-
I smoothed the edges to ensure clean assembly and a refined finish.
-
Using a power drill, screwdriver, and screws, I carefully aligned and secured each piece to maintain structural integrity.

Final Curation.
The completed chair was evaluated for structural integrity, craftsmanship, and adherence to Rietveld’s original concept. I also reflected on the challenges faced, such as precision in cutting and alignment, and how they contributed to my understanding of furniture design. This project deepened my appreciation for minimalist, functional furniture and enhanced my woodworking abilities.
